Why these strains feel sleepy

Sleepy is the purest indica effect in the database: more than nine in ten sleepy strains are indicas, and almost none are sativas. The terpene profile is the calming trio of myrcene, caryophyllene and linalool, with linalool far more common here than in the database overall. Nearly every sleepy strain is also tagged relaxed, and about six in ten are tagged body high, so the sedation comes with physical heaviness rather than a cerebral fade.

What to look for in a sleepy strain

  • Indica or indica-dominant hybrid with myrcene as the lead terpene
  • Linalool in the top three terpenes for a calmer, less cerebral onset
  • "Sleepy" reported as a primary effect, not just "Relaxed"
  • Old-school kush and Afghani lineage, which dominates the sedating end

Sleepy strain FAQ

Is indica or sativa better for sleep?›

Indica, and the data is unusually clear on this one: more than nine in ten strains tagged sleepy are indica or indica-dominant. Strain type is a rough guide, though. Terpenes matter more, so look for myrcene and linalool regardless of the label.

How long before bed should I use a sleepy strain?›

Inhaled cannabis peaks within about 30 minutes, so most people use it 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Edibles take one to two hours to peak and last much longer, which suits people who wake in the night but can leave a next-morning haze.

Does CBN help with sleep?›

CBN, a cannabinoid that forms as THC ages, is widely marketed for sleep. The evidence is thin and mostly anecdotal, and the sedating effect of aged cannabis is at least partly THC plus the terpene profile. A myrcene- and linalool-heavy indica is a more reliable bet than chasing a CBN number.
